In Widnes 25 Years Ago:
Members of the present generation who have marvelled at the introductionof post women and women bus conductors will be interested in the reminderthat similar expediences were necessary in the Great War. The first postgirl in Widnes, Miss Clarence Devlin, was seen a quarter of a century agodaily doing the postman's round in the Ball of Ditton and Upton. She wasa member of a well-known Widnes family, daughter of the late CaptainDevlin, and brother of George who was killed in the battle of the Aisnes;Fred, taken prisoner at Mons; and Arthur. The Army tradition ismaintained, for Mrs Clarence Horabin (nee Devlin) is the mother of threesons serving in the war, Corporal Arthur Horabin, Gunner George Horabinand Gerald (aged 15) granted special enlistment owing to militarytraditions and attached to his grandfather's old regiment, the SouthLancashire.

Horabin - in loving memory of our dear son Joseph Henry Horabin, 7thLeicestershires, who was killed in action 14 July 1916 age 19 years -ever remembered by Father, Mother and family, 41 Davies Street, Widnes

Horabin - in loving memory of Joseph Henry Horabin, 7th Lancs. who waskilled in action 17 July 1916 aged 19 years. Ever remembered by hisloving sister and brother-in-law. 48 St Mary's Road, Widnes.

War Graves:
FLATIRON COPSE CEMETERY, MAMETZ
Flatiron Copse was the name given by the army to a small plantation alittle to the east of Mametz Wood. The ground was taken by the 3rd and7th Divisions on 14 July 1916 and an advanced dressing station wasestablished at the copse. The cemetery was begun later that month and itremained in use until April 1917. Two further burials were made in August1918 and after the Armistice, more than 1,100 graves were brought in fromsmaller cemeteries and from the neighbouring battlefields. Almost all theconcentrated graves are those of men who died in the summer and autumn of1916. There are now 1,568 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World Warburied or commemorated in this cemetery. 416 of the burials areunidentified but there are special memorials to 36 casualties known orbelieved to be buried among them, and nine buried in Mametz Wood Cemeterywhose graves were destroyed by shell fire. The cemetery was designed bySir Herbert Baker.
